Taiwan’s Plastic Reduction Timeline
Since 2018, Taiwan has implemented phased reduction or usage restrictions on four major single-use items: plastic bags, disposable tableware, plastic straws, and single-use beverage cups.
Implementation Strategy: Expand the scope of control → Strengthen pricing tools → Complete ban
Achievements:
Plastic Bags: Annual reduction of ~10.7 billion bags compared to 2002 (91st year of the Republic of China calendar).
Beverage Cups: Annual reduction of ~460 million cups compared to 2020 (109th year).
Disposable Tableware: Annual reduction of ~800 million items compared to 2002.
Plastic Straws: Annual reduction of ~100 million straws compared to 2019 (108th year).
International Recognition:
In 2024, Canada’s Plastic Action Centre praised Taiwan’s use of paper cups instead of single-use plastic cups, promotion of bringing reusable cups, and circulation cup rental programs.
Greenpeace International also noted in 2024 that reusable containers are becoming a feasible lifestyle choice in Taiwan, and large-scale events are increasingly adopting reusable tableware.
